What is a cron expression?

A cron expression is a string of 5 (or 6) fields representing a schedule: minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week. Each field can be a number, range, list, or wildcard (*).

What does * mean in a cron expression?

The asterisk (*) means "every" for that field. So * in the minute field means "every minute", and * in the hour field means "every hour".
